[St Kitts & Nevis, February 13-14 and 15-16, 2017 ] Fishers came together for a two day workshop entitled “Capacity Building in Fisheries Management and Fisherfolk Leadership”. The workshop was organized by the CNFO, in conjunction with the Nature Conservatory (TNC) and the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) Secretariat under the Eastern Caribbean Marine Managed Areas Network(ECMMAN) Project and attracted participants from the fishers cooperative. There were approximately 35 persons in attendance for the knowledge-sharing and skills-building event.
Among this workshop’s objectives, was the promotion of awareness for the laws, regulations, and policies applicable to the fisheries sector in St. Kitts and Nevis. This underscores the importance of capacity building in fisheries management to our region’s fishers because new legislation has been passed in St. Kitts and Nevis that will impact the fisheries sector and guide its management.
According to Mr. Winston Hobson, the workshop was a useful activity that provided fishers with the opportunity to learn of these new fisheries measures and to discuss the implications, while identifying opportunities to participate in the governance and management of the sector. The CNFO hopes to continue to develop its members to become great leaders.
